So, what was this amazing project that I did for them?

It must have been big….. It must have been complex….. It must have been expensive…. to have such a huge impact on their business? No. No. And No…

All that I did for them was to sit down individually with each employee, and ask them a few questions about the company. A simple case of team research, and with it a by-product of some great employee engagement. The time that I spent with the team was pretty much a good old-fashioned ‘SWOT’, some ‘START/STOP/MORE and a ‘what would you suggest we do’. It’s not difficult to do and it’s not complex. Each conversation was confidential; that’s one of the key points that ensures that you, as a business owner, get the most out of it.

The report that I delivered was ‘collective themes’ rather than ‘he said this/she said that’. I told the employees that it would be, and again, this gave them the reassurance to be as open and honest as they could be.

The report gave the client some really great insights and now lays a fantastic foundation for them to build their forward strategy on. And the brilliant thing about doing this type of employee engagement and team research is that it’s not difficult to do!

You may think that this article is simply me telling you about a client, and what I delivered for them. It isn’t, because I have ‘been there, done that’.

I know first-hand how effective it is to get an Outsider in to the company to ask the team what they think. When I owned my business I did exactly the same thing. Someone who knew nothing about our business came in and interviewed all of my team individually. He then collated a report back to me and my senior management team. Wow, what a difference it made to my business; those comments and the findings of the report laid the foundations for our next two years business strategy. A strategy that ultimately delivered a successful, multi-million pound business sale.

Companies often churn out the standard cliche that ‘our employees are our most important asset’. But do they ever ask them what they really think?
