The Sliding Doors Moment

Over the length of my business career I’ve had a few ‘Sliding Doors’ moments. In most people’s business, and personal lives, there will be many; that job you did/didn’t got for, that lucky break with the client, the night you met your wife/husband etc. But I many cases, you can probably point to one that is so much bigger than all the others.

However there was one MAJOR one in my business journey from kitchen table to multi-million pound sale to a plc that happened very early on.

Whilst the business was very much in its infancy, and it was still ‘touch and go’ whether we’d even carry it on, I was still looking for a ‘proper job’. After a number of faile dinterviews, I eventually I landed a great job at a very well respected, leading digital agency (senior role, good salary, car, etc etc)

However, after much soul-searching on the Friday before the Monday that I was due to start, I went in to see them to apologise and tell them I couldn’t take the job as I had this ‘thing’ that might become something….. 😬

At the time I had kids of 7 and 5. I had no regular income apart from this nascent website plus a few short-term consultancy projects. Stupidity? Arrogance? Luck? Who knows….. I didn’t know at the time what the business eventually become. Indeed if you’d told me at the time, I wouldn’t have believed you!

THAT was my Sliding Doors moment…… everything I did subsequently with the business might never had happened had I taken the safe route of the nice job!!!

Business owners have to make loads of decisions on a weekly, even daily, basis. Who knows which one could end up being your Sliding Doors moment? I do believe in taking opportunities; just think, that network event you don’t feel like attending, perhaps you should turn up. You never know which potential client ‘might’ be at that event……

Sliding Doors Moment

By the way, if you didn’t know, the term came from the 1998 film of the same name, starring Gwyneth Paltrow. It’s now a phrase used to describe major (or minor) moments in time that affects your future in a big way.
