How to be great at delegation

Delegation is hard to do. Delegation is one of those skills that people under-estimate in terms of learning demand. It is one of the most powerful tools in a business owner’s toolkit.

Delegation is a really important skill as you as a Business Owner start to grow your business. There are five steps to being really great at delegation.

1 – Get yourself a delegation skills training course. It can be really difficult to do this well. Getting trained will ensure that you avoid some of the pitfalls when delegation to your team.

2 – Once you have been trained, take a look at your ‘To-Do’ list (see my work prioritisation system) and set yourself the target of getting rid of everything off the list. You won’t be able to do that but it’s a great mindset trick in terms ensuring you really get stuck into this activity.

3 – Once you decided which tasks you are going to delegate, you need to decide who you are going to delegate them to. You need to select the best person to do this task but very importantly you need to make sure that person is trained to do the task that they are given. Never delegate something to somebody who’s not been trained to do it

4 – Explain to the person that you have selected what the task is, what you expect them to do, to what standard you expect it to be done to and to what deadline.

5 – Make sure that when the person has done the job you review it, for quality purposes, and make sure you feed back to the person to ensure and even better performance next time.

The more work that you can delegate the better it will be, and the better you will become at, freeing you up to do more valuable, important and interesting work. You will also end up with a team with an improved skill set, and being more highly motivated having been given additional responsibilities.
