Could you find a new FREE audience for your existing product?

I’ve recently returned from a holiday in Mexico. As part of the trip we took a ‘walking food tour’. If you’ve never done this before, the basic concept is a local guide walks you round, taking you to various local eateries to try local dishes, along with an explanation of them. It’s a great way to experience local dishes that you wouldn’t normally try, and usually in cafes and via street vendors you almost certainly wouldn’t visit! We have done this on a number of foreign trips and it is highly recommended.

The picture below is of me trying out the local ‘panuchos’ and ‘salbutes’.

new audience

Once we had finished, a thought popped into my head? ‘Do they do this in England? And if so, what food would it be?’ A quick google and yes of course they do. Fish & chips, scotch eggs, jellied eels, pork pies, scones with jam…. and much, much more. Of course, to tourists these dishes are weird & wonderful and give a flavour of Britain.

So what has this got to do with business?

Look at it. The food tours are a completely different market and audience to the cafe, chippie and restaurant owners’ usual audience. It’s probably a regular income, with no marketing costs (the food guides bring the tourists in) and they’re probably charging a premium to the unknowing tourists. All for what? Nothing. Same product, no additional production costs, no additional staffing. Nothing.

All they have done is turned their product 180⁰ upside down and found a completely new market and new audience for an existing product. And probably with a price premium.

Makes you think, doesn’t it? Could you do the same with your business? Look at your product ‘upside down’ and see what opportunities there could be for you…..
