Constructive criticism
How well do you take criticism?
“I have desire to be proved wrong or to be wrong in my diagnostic, because if I find out I am wrong, I have the option to correct and to learn from the error”
This was a quote from Marcello Bielsa’s press conference last week. The wording is a bit clunky, but it’s a translation from Leeds United’s brilliant manager’s original Spanish to English. It’s a old cliche, but we learn more from our mistakes than our successes.
But how open are you, as a Business Owner, to ‘constructive criticism’? Do you have a company culture that allows, or even encourages this? Could someone knock on your office door and tell you what you might be doing wrong? Have you ever asked the question of your team, how you as an individual can improve?
In my business, we brought an external consultant in who asked all of our team their thoughts on the business. It transpired from his report back to me that I, THE BOSS, was getting in the way of the company’s progress 😱. I had to park my ego, listen to their thoughts, take it on the chin and change. Could you do the same?
I performed the same ‘360 review’ for a client recently, asking his team their thoughts on every aspect of the business. The client’s message to me afterwards “The most enlightening thing we’ve ever engaged in”, says it all. You can read more about the exercise and the eventual outputs here.
If you’d like to discuss doing the same with your team, or anything similar, drop me an email or give me a call.
