What is your Elevator Pitch?
Before we start, let’s just clarify ‘what is an elevator pitch?’ An ‘Elevator Pitch’ is a US phrase that has come into use over here to describe a brief speech that outlines what your product, service, idea or project is. The name comes from the notion that the speech should be short enough to be delivered in the short time that an elevator ride (It’s a ‘lift’, guys… a ‘lift’) takes.
And this topic was sparked by two incidents this week. This week I’ve reviewed a pitch deck, and looked at a website of a potential client. In both instances I’ve been left with the question ‘but what is it you actually do?’ This should be a simple question that any of your ‘marketing’ says, and I use the term marketing in it’s broadest sense,
For some reason Business Owners seem to think it’s important to ‘plump up’ their offering with marketing and business speak that, rather than make their offering more enticing, just makes you scratch your head. And that confusion will only lead to one thing; potential customers walking away.
“We facilitate cutting edge cross border communications and integrated hardware” or some such drivel……
Oh you sell mobile phones and phone systems !
The solution? Do the Mum test.
Sit down with your Mum/Granny/Old lady you collared in Asda and read out your website/pitch deck/brochure guff. Did she understand what you do?
If she didn’t then its too complicated, and unclear. It needs simplifying.
So……. what does your business do?
Try this as a structure for your Elevator pitch (I came across it recently here);
“We help X do Y through Z”
X = Your Target Customer
Y = The benefit(s) you bring
Z = How you do it
Give it a try. You have a maximum of one sentence to tell me your Elevator Pitch. GO……
