Business Learnings from Disney Cartoons

You can find business learnings in all sorts of unlikely places.

Forget Covey, Drucker and the rest, today’s business lesson is from Walt Disney, and in particular, The Cheshire Cat, when he meets Alice in the classic cartoon version of ‘Alice In Wonderland’ first released in 1951.

To set the scene, Alice is following, but has lost, the White Rabbit. She comes across and strange disappearing, and re-appearing Cheshire cat.

Alice “I just wanted to ask you, which way I ought to go?”

The Cheshire Cat “Well, that depends on where you want to get to”

Alice “Oh, it really doesn’t matter….”

The Cheshire Cat “Then it really doesn’t matter which way you go…”

I’m sure you have all seen the Disney cartoon version, but if you haven’t (OMG what were you doing in your childhood to have not seen it…!) here is the scene that I’m referring to;

The business lesson from this? If you don’t know where your business is trying to get to, it really doesn’t matter what you do.

Conversely, if you turn that around, and in simple terms, you need to know what you aim is before you can decide what the best strategy is. And that is relevant both for long-term aims as well as short term projects.

If you’d like to watch/see more about my thoughts on setting longer term aims and building strategies around them, see my interactive webinar recording on the FFS Business Strategy tool.
